L'ospite indesiderato, nella serata che al Mestalla ha consegnato al Barcellona la Coppa del Re, è stato l'inno spagnolo. Incuranti della presenza del re Juan Carlos sugli spalti, nè i tifosi baschi dell'Atlhletic Bilbao nè quelli catalani del Barça hanno risparmiato sonori fischi all'inno poco prima dell'avvio del match. Curiosa la reazione della televisione spagnola che, tentando di mettere una pezza, ha interrotto la diretta e mandato in onda immagini dei tifosi nelle piazze di Bilbao e Barcellona.

Uno stacco poi giustificato come 'errore umano', cui si è cercato di rimediare trasmettendo il sonoro dell'inno in differita con i fischi ridotti al minimo, mostrando un'immagine fissa delle squadre schierate all'ascolto. Cosa non fare per mascherare la foga indipendentista...

Barça in finale grazie all'1-1 al 93'


Il Barcellona strappa al 93' col Chelsea l'1-1 che vale l'accesso alla finale di Champions League. I Blues, in rete al 9' con Essien, pensavano già alla rivincita col Manchester, dopo la sconfitta ai rigori nella finale 2008. Ma Iniesta, quasi allo scadere, ha firmato il pareggio che elimina gli inglesi. Catalani in 10 al 21' della ripresa per il rosso ad Abidal, poi al 37' proteste del Chelsea per un fallo di mano di Pique in area, non fischiato.

Sei gol al Real per fare cifra tonda


Per raggiungere un obiettivo che già era nell'aria da tempo, il Barcellona ha dovuto esagerare. Stravincere, per essere chiari, sul campo del Real, umiliando la rivale di sempre al Bernabeu. Fatto sta che, grazie alle sei reti di Madrid, Messi e compagni hanno tagliato il traguardo dei cento gol in campionato. Cento in trentaquattro gare, in pratica tre a partita, una cosa pazzesca, per dirla come in realtà è. E lo scudetto ora è a un passo.

Poi, certo, con quei tre là davanti sembra facile. Facile, prevedibile, immaginabile, non era invece lo show di Madrid. Roba da levarsi il cappello. Comprensibile, di qui, che Guardiola abbia definito la notte del Bernabeu una "delle più belle della mia vita". E comprensibile, ovviamente, anche la festa folle di Barcellona, con i culé tutti in piazza per abbracciare gli eroi blaugrana. I campioni, per dirla come loro: "¡Sí, sí, sí... los campeones ya están aquí!". I campioni sono qui.

Non resta, dunque, che far scattare il countdown e concentrarsi, magari, su bersagli più grossi. Strana la vita: fino a sabato sera il Barcellona dei miracoli rischiava perfino di perdere tutto. Ora il divario sottile tra vittoria e sconfitta si è spostato dalla parte buona. La Liga è solo da archiviare. La Champions va ancora conquistata, ma resta possibile. Resta lì, solo da prendere. Throughout most of the pre-match warm-up and at halftime, music was played over the stadium loudspeaker system. One of the songs heard more than once was Coldplay’s ‘Viva la vida'. According to Xavi, this song brings him luck.




The Barça midfielder doesn’t deny that the team is in an “unsurpassable situation” but remains cautious – “we haven’t done anything yet”. Xavi is well aware that the two months ahead will be really tough.

With a place in the CL quarterfinals in the bag, Barça has made an important step forward in their bid to win all three competitions. In the space of just one week, Barça has reached the Spanish Cup final, increased the lead over Real Madrid in the league and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

However, speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Xavi Hernandez called for everyone to keep their feet on the ground with some difficult matches coming up – “the moment of truth”.

The first half


Xavi believes that the first half of the match against Lyon showcased the best of the current Barça team: “The first half is the example we have to follow. That’s the way we have to play, how we have to press, the rhythm we have to impose, the sharpness in front of goal. If it’s not perfect it’s pretty close”.

Attacking football

The performance seen on Wednesday evening is the fruit of the philosophy drilled into the team by Josep Guardiola. According to Xavi, “We work a lot on positional play, triangulations, we open up the pitch well and that makes us play well”. He also confirmed that there had been no desire to sit back and rely on the 1-1 draw achieved in the first leg: “Barça only knows how to go out and win the game”.

No preferences

Xavi has no preferences as to the rival in the next round of the CL though he prefers the second leg in the Camp Nou.


Asked about the success of the four representatives from the Premier League, Xavi denied that it meant that English football is superior given that Arsenal qualified in a penalty shootout while Inter Milan had the better of the goal scoring opportunities against Manchester United.

The Spanish league

Xavi Hernandez declined to comment on how the elimination of Real Madrid from the CL might affect the race for the Spanish league title: “They’ll have one game a week now and will be able to rest. You never know what’s better. But we’re happy to have got through to the quarterfinals”.
